Five At Home Date Night Ideas

by | May 13, 2024 | Family

Committing to a regular date night is such an important part of relationships. But what if you’re in the middle of a busy season or going out regularly doesn’t fit your budget? An at home date night is the perfect answer.

It’s easy to let staying in become a routine of turning on a movie, scrolling through social media, and calling it a “date.” And while this can be fun, too, the key to a good at home date is to be present and distraction-free.

Start tonight! Here are a few ideas to get you on your way.

Fancy Dinner

Having a 5-star restaurant experience in your own dining room is a fun way to bring in the ambiance of a traditional date without having to get a babysitter. Make your own dinner, but make sure it’s a meal you both drool over. See a few main dish ideas here. Pull out all the stops in setting it up. The fine china you have but never use? Get it out. The candles you have in the back of the cupboard? Unearth them and light ’em up. Dress up fancy and meet at the kitchen table for an evening of at-home elegance.

Board Games

If you’re looking for a little friendly competition, a boardgame is the way to go. When was the last time you sat down to play checkers or Monopoly™ … or cribbage!? Board games are an awesome way to mix up your regular evening routine and do something lighthearted. Plus, most board games require some strategizing, so you’re giving your brain a workout, too! It’s a win-win!

Baking

Baking is a fun way to not only make some tasty food but work toward a common goal with your partner. And Baking in a team of two requires communication and trust, both of which can always be improved on.

Take time to browse for recipes on sites like Pinterest™ or allrecipes.com. Having a hard time deciding? Think about meals from your childhood or a dessert you haven’t had in ages. Feeling adventurous? Try making cuisine from another country! Or, grab an idea from your favorite episode of “The Great British Bakeoff”!

Get to Know You Quiz

How well do you really know each other? Why not put it to the test? Take half an hour or so and each of you come up with obscure facts about yourself. The harder the better! Swap quizzes and take the test for your partner. Whoever does better wins!

Need help with question ideas? Ask yourself these to get you going.

  • Who was my first-grade teacher?
  • What’s my favorite smell?
  • What is my favorite movie?
  • What size shoe do I wear?

Future Planning

If you’re in the mood for something a little more subdued, having a “dream night” might just be your ally. Get your favorite snack and drinks, and then talk about everything you want to accomplish, both individually and with your partner. Talk about your dream house, dream car, dream relationship, and dream life. Soak in the hope of it all, and—if you’re feeling extra motivated—make plans for how to achieve it!

For additional motivation, consider making a dream board. This is a great visualization trick to keep you on track. Find pictures of all your dreams and put them on a bulletin board or other display and keep them somewhere you will see them often. If you are more of the tech sort, try making Pinterest boards to keep track of your dreams.
